Area of Science:

  • Medical Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Acute suppurative parotitis commonly affects elderly, debilitated patients.
  • Salivary gland infections are typically bacterial, with fungal causes being rare.
  • Candida albicans is a common oral commensal but an infrequent cause of sialoadenitis.

Observation:

  • An elderly diabetic male presented with acute suppurative parotitis and abscess.
  • The parotid abscess was diagnosed as being caused by Candida albicans.
  • Diagnosis was confirmed by culturing discharge and abscess pus.

Findings:

  • Candida albicans is an unusual pathogen for parotid gland abscess.
  • Effective treatment involved surgical drainage and a 4-week course of fluconazole.
