Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if mandibular bone tissues on DPTs differ significantly between osteoporotic and non-osteoporotic women.
  • To develop a simple, cost-effective screening method for osteoporosis using DPT analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Compared DPT images from 36 osteoporotic women with 20 non-osteoporotic women.
  • Assessed mandibular atrophy using six anatomic indexes and relative bone density (RBD) via color histogram analysis.
  • Calculated nine RBD indexes based on mandible-specific measurements.

  • Mandibular atrophy indexes were 1.5 to 2.5 times higher in the osteoporotic group.
  • Average RBD indexes showed statistically significant differences between the groups (P<0.05).
