Summary

Lumbar paraspinal fatiguing exercise acutely inhibits quadriceps activation in healthy individuals and those with low back pain. Individuals with low back pain demonstrated greater quadriceps activation post-exercise.

Background:

  • Poor paraspinal muscle endurance is linked to reduced quadriceps activation (QA) in individuals with low back pain.
  • The acute neuromuscular response following lumbar paraspinal fatiguing exercise remains understudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare QA after lumbar paraspinal fatiguing exercise in healthy individuals versus those with a history of low back pain.

Main Methods:

  • Employed a 2 x 4 repeated-measures, time-series design.
  • Participants (n=16) performed 3 sets of isometric lumbar paraspinal fatiguing contractions.
  • Quadriceps activation ratio (QA) was calculated using superimposed electric bursts during maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVICs).
