Background:

Prenatal care is a long-standing tradition in the U.S. healthcare system.
Significant public and personal resources are invested in prenatal care.
Current prenatal care models face challenges in addressing modern perinatal prevention needs.

Observation:

The evolution and efficacy of traditional prenatal care warrant critical review.
Existing prenatal care structures may not be optimally meeting current perinatal challenges.
Restructuring efforts in prenatal care content and processes are underway.

Findings:

The efficacy of traditional prenatal care in meeting contemporary perinatal prevention challenges is questioned.
Three alternative models offer promising approaches: comprehensive care (publicly funded clinics), empowerment (midwifery), and group (CenteringPregnancy).
