Summary

Oligodendrogliomas (OL) can show focal glial and neuronal markers, complicating diagnosis. This study found that while some OLs exhibit these markers, widespread neuronal staining may indicate other tumors.

Purpose:

  • To investigate glial and neuronal differentiation in typical oligodendrogliomas using immunohistochemical markers.
  • To assess the expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neuron-specific enolase (NSE), synaptophysin, and S-100 in OL specimens.

Summary:

  • Out of 42 OL specimens, 78.5% showed GFAP positivity, often focally.
  • Neuronal differentiation markers (NSE/synaptophysin) were focally positive in 28.5% of cases.
