    Summary

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH), a common liver tumor, is often found in women using oral contraceptives. This case highlights FNH discovered incidentally in a young woman without hormone use, emphasizing diverse presentations of this liver lesion.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatobiliary Medicine
    • Diagnostic Imaging
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Advancements in imaging technologies like ultrasonography, CT, and MRI have increased the detection of both symptomatic and asymptomatic liver tumors.
    • Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign liver tumor, frequently asymptomatic, predominantly affecting women of reproductive age, often linked to oral contraceptive use.

    Observation:

    • A 27-year-old woman, with no history of oral contraceptive or hormone use, presented with an incidentally discovered left lobe liver tumor during a routine investigation for psychiatric issues.
    • The resected tumor consisted of two nodes, measuring 70x58x47 mm and 20x20x20 mm, with the larger node exhibiting a characteristic pale, central stellate scar.

    Findings:

    • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH).

    Implications:

    • This case underscores that FNH can occur in women without typical risk factors such as oral contraceptive use, necessitating consideration in differential diagnoses for liver lesions.
    • The successful surgical resection (left lateral bisegmentectomy) resulted in an uneventful recovery and long-term symptom-free survival for the patient, demonstrating effective management of FNH.
