Summary

Hyperprolactinemia, or elevated prolactin, is common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. This study found a significant link between high prolactin levels and lupus disease activity.

Background:

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Hyperprolactinemia is a condition characterized by elevated serum prolactin levels.
  • The relationship between hyperprolactinemia and SLE activity requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of hyperprolactinemia in SLE patients.
  • To evaluate the clinical significance of elevated prolactin levels in SLE.
  • To assess the correlation between prolactin concentrations and SLE disease activity.

Main Methods:

  • Serum prolactin (PRL) levels were measured in 30 SLE patients using radioimmunometric assay.
  • Clinical disease activity was assessed with the Systemic Lupus Activity Measure.

  • Antinuclear antibodies were determined, and PRL levels were correlated with clinical and serological markers.

    • Hyperprolactinemia was detected in 33.3% of SLE patients (10 out of 30).
    • A significant positive correlation was observed between PRL levels and SLE clinical disease activity (P < 0.001, r = 0.675).
    • Elevated PRL levels were also associated with serological markers of SLE activity.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperprolactinemia is frequently observed in patients with SLE.
    • Elevated prolactin levels are significantly correlated with both clinical and serological indicators of lupus activity.
    • Hyperprolactinemia may play a role in the pathogenesis or manifestation of SLE.
