Summary

Limited research suggests intranasal capsaicin may not effectively treat allergic rhinitis. Further studies are needed to determine if capsaicin has a therapeutic role in managing this common condition.

Background:

Allergic rhinitis is a global health issue characterized by non-specific nasal hyperresponsiveness.
Sensory nerves in the upper airway mucosa, particularly C fibers, are implicated in this phenomenon.
Intranasal capsaicin stimulates these afferent nerves, potentially triggering reflexes and neuropeptide release.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of capsaicin for treating allergic rhinitis in adult patients.

Main Methods:

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was conducted.
Searches included major databases like Cochrane, MEDLINE, and EMBASE up to January 2006.
Study selection and quality assessment were performed by multiple independent reviewers.

One small trial found no significant therapeutic effect of intranasal capsaicin for allergic rhinitis.
A minor pharmacological effect on histamine response was observed.
No increase in leukotriene levels was detected in nasal lavage post-treatment.

Conclusions:

Current evidence is insufficient to support the clinical use of capsaicin for allergic rhinitis.
More research is required to establish capsaicin's efficacy and safety in managing allergic rhinitis.
