Summary

Eye patching for corneal abrasions does not improve healing or reduce pain. This systematic review recommends against using eye patches for simple corneal abrasions due to lack of benefit and loss of binocular vision.

  • This review assesses the efficacy of eye patches in corneal abrasion management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of eye patching in promoting corneal abrasion healing.
  • To determine if eye patching provides pain relief for corneal abrasions.
  • To test the hypothesis that patching improves healing or pain outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched multiple databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, NRR, SIGLE) without language or date restrictions.
  • Included 11 trials with 1014 participants, assessing healing and pain outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Meta-analysis showed no benefit of patching on first-day healing (RR 0.89, 95% CI 0.79 to 0.99).
  • No significant difference in healing on days two and three.
  • Pain scores favored no patching in 2 of 9 trials; no trials favored patching. Complication rates were similar.

Conclusions:

  • Eye patching does not enhance healing or reduce pain for simple corneal abrasions.
  • Patching leads to a loss of binocular vision.
  • Recommendation: Avoid patches for simple corneal abrasions; focus research on larger abrasions.
