Summary

Resting hypofrontality, a chronic feature in schizophrenia, may reflect microcirculation changes rather than direct frontal dysfunction. This finding was observed in patients with longer illness durations.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate resting hypofrontality in schizophrenia using time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS).
  • To explore the relationship between resting hypofrontality and illness duration.

Main Methods:

  • Employed a single-channel TRS instrument to measure hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations at rest.
  • Utilized CW-NIRS for measuring activation during a random number generation (RNG) task.
  • Included 14 male schizophrenic patients and 16 age-matched male controls.

  • Reduced total hemoglobin (t-Hb) at rest was observed in some patients, particularly on the left side.
  • Activation hypofrontality was more pronounced in patients with reduced resting t-Hb.

Conclusions:

  • Resting hypofrontality appears to be a chronic, not acute, feature of schizophrenia.
  • This may indicate anatomical or functional changes in frontal microcirculation.
  • It does not necessarily signify direct frontal lobe dysfunction.
