Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between personality traits and performance decrements during respirator use.
  • To determine if psychological factors mediate the negative effects of inspiratory resistance on exercise performance.

  • Thirty-one subjects exercised on a treadmill at 80-85% VO(2)max while wearing a modified M40 respirator with three levels of inspiratory resistance.
  • Personality traits were assessed using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory.
  • Statistical analyses included multiple regressions and ANOVA to correlate traits with performance time.
