Summary

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) shows promise for adolescent depression. Early results indicate significant improvement and no adverse effects in two adolescent subjects receiving active treatment.

Observation:

  • Two adolescent subjects with major depression participated in a double-blind, sham-controlled trial of rTMS.
  • Subjects were randomly assigned to receive active rTMS treatment.
  • Clinical response and neuropsychological functioning were assessed weekly.

Findings:

  • Both subjects demonstrated clinically significant improvement following rTMS treatment.
  • No adverse effects were reported by either subject during the trial.
