Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is recognized as a central pain disorder.
  • Antidepressant therapies, including electroconvulsive therapy, offer symptomatic relief for FM and other chronic pain conditions.
  • Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an emerging antidepressant treatment with potential applications in pain management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) as a treatment for fibromyalgia (FM) pain.
  • To explore the potential of rTMS in managing centrally mediated pain disorders.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of four women diagnosed with depression, FM, and borderline personality disorder participated.
  • 1-Hz rTMS was applied to the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in these participants.

  • Pain intensity was self-assessed using an 11-point Likert scale before and after treatment.

    • Pretreatment average pain score was 8.2, significantly decreasing to 1.5 post-rTMS (P < 0.009).

    • Only one subject demonstrated an antidepressant response, suggesting pain relief may be independent of mood improvement in this sample.

    Conclusions:

    • Preliminary results indicate that rTMS may be a viable therapeutic option for alleviating fibromyalgia pain.
    • Further research is warranted to confirm the role of rTMS in treating FM and other chronic pain conditions.
