Meat--can we live without it?

The human species is known to have subsisted for many thousands of years on a diet high in vegetable content and low in animal products. Investigations into the relationship of diet to disease indicate that nutrient goals need to be reassessed. Consumption of meat may not be essential for a balanced diet. What does scientific evidence have to say about this?
