Background:

Epilepsy surgery, specifically temporal resections like amygdala-hippocampectomy, is a treatment for drug-resistant epilepsy.
The amygdala-hippocampal region plays a role in memory and emotional processing.

Observation:

A 20-year-old woman with a 12-year history of generalized epilepsy underwent left amygdala-hippocampectomy due to drug resistance.
The patient had a history of childhood sexual abuse.

Findings:

Two weeks post-surgery, the patient developed symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
This suggests a potential link between the amygdala-hippocampal region's function/morphology and PTSD etiology.
