Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurology
  • Audiology

Background:

  • Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) presents diagnostic challenges regarding its causes and prognostic indicators.
  • Effective prediction of SSNHL outcomes is essential for patient management and treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key factors influencing the prognosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).
  • To enhance the ability to predict recovery rates in patients diagnosed with SSNHL.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective chart-review study involving 296 patients with SSNHL.
  • Logistic regression analysis was employed to assess the relationship between various factors and hearing recovery.
  • Explanatory variables included age, time to presentation, vestibular symptoms, initial hearing levels, and treatments received.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • For patients with partial recovery, the number of days until presentation and patient age were significant predictors.
  • For patients with full recovery, time to presentation, presence of vestibular symptoms, age, and initial mean hearing level were strongly associated with the outcome.
  • The study identified distinct factors influencing different levels of SSNHL recovery.

Conclusions:

  • Timely presentation and younger age are critical for better outcomes in SSNHL.
  • Vestibular symptoms and initial hearing level also play a role in predicting full recovery from SSNHL.
  • These findings improve the predictive accuracy for SSNHL prognosis, aiding clinical decision-making.
