Area of Science:

  • Optical imaging systems
  • Image processing techniques
  • Wave optics

Background:

  • The point spread function (PSF) is crucial for understanding image quality.
  • Radial Hilbert transforms are used for edge enhancement in imaging.
  • Conventional spiral phase plates (SPPs) have limitations in achieving high-resolution edge enhancement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the PSF of an image processing system for radial Hilbert transform.
  • To propose a novel spiral phase filter, the Laguerre-Gaussian spatial filter (LGSF).
  • To compare the performance of LGSF with conventional SPPs.

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical analysis of the point spread function (PSF).
  • Development and implementation of the Laguerre-Gaussian spatial filter (LGSF).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Experimental validation of the LGSF's performance.
  • Main Results:

    • The LGSF demonstrated smaller suboscillations in its PSF compared to SPPs.
    • The LGSF enables a more effective radial Hilbert transform.
    • High contrast edge enhancement with high resolution was achieved using LGSF.

    Conclusions:

    • The Laguerre-Gaussian spatial filter (LGSF) offers significant advantages over conventional spiral phase plates (SPPs).
    • LGSF facilitates improved radial Hilbert transforms for superior edge enhancement.
    • The proposed LGSF is a promising tool for high-resolution imaging applications.
