[First reported case of AIDS in China]

Background:

• Diagnostic confirmation included positive HIV antibody tests (ELISA, IFA, WB), decreased CD4+ T-lymphocyte counts, reversed CD4/CD8 ratios, and HIV-1 isolation.

Findings:

• Autopsy revealed generalized lymphoid tissue atrophy, lymphocytic depletion, and central nervous system toxoplasmosis.
• Multifocal Kaposi's sarcoma in the gastrointestinal tract and bronchopneumonia were also identified as opportunistic conditions.
