Summary

Pseudoscleroderma, a skin condition mimicking systemic sclerosis (SSc), can be linked to malignancies. This study found elevated basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in pseudoscleroderma patients, suggesting a potential diagnostic marker.

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disease characterized by skin hardening.
  • Differentiating SSc from malignancy-associated pseudoscleroderma is crucial for patient management.
  • Investigating biomarkers for accurate diagnosis is an ongoing area of research.

Observation:

  • During 1994-2002, 71 patients with sclerotic skin changes were studied.
  • 66 patients were diagnosed with systemic sclerosis (SSc).
  • Five patients (7%) were diagnosed with pseudoscleroderma associated with malignancies.

Findings:

  • Pseudoscleroderma patients had shorter disease duration and fewer SSc-specific symptoms (antinuclear antibodies, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal involvement) compared to SSc patients.
