Area of Science:

  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Urology

Background:

  • Vaginal agenesis and other conditions necessitate vaginal reconstruction.
  • Bowel vaginoplasty is a surgical technique used for vaginal replacement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review a 23-year experience with bowel vaginoplasty.
  • To assess postoperative quality of life and sexual function.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 57 patients undergoing bowel vaginoplasty (1980-2004).
  • Vaginal segments used: sigmoid colon (39), ileum (9), cecum (9).
  • Postoperative sexual function evaluated using the Female Sexual Distress Questionnaire (FSDQ).

Main Results:

  • 44 patients evaluated for sexual function; 36 completed the FSDQ.

Related Experiment Videos

  • 78% reported sexual desire, 78% sexual satisfaction.
  • 89% reported adequate lubrication; 22% reported no orgasms.
  • Conclusions:
