Summary

Quail poisoning, a rare acute dietary-toxicological syndrome, can cause rhabdomyolysis. This case report details the first known instance in a child, who recovered fully with supportive care.

Background:

  • Quail consumption, particularly European quail (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) during autumn migration, is a known cause of acute dietary-toxicological syndrome in humans.
  • This poisoning is specific to the autumn migration period and is not observed during the spring return flight.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old boy presented with symptoms of acute rhabdomyolysis, including elevated serum muscle enzymes and myoglobinuria, 5 hours after consuming quail.
  • The patient experienced a non-fatal episode of quail poisoning.

Findings:

  • Laboratory findings indicated acute rhabdomyolysis, characterized by elevated serum muscle enzymes and myoglobinuria.
  • The child's condition was successfully managed with symptomatic treatment, including bed rest, forced diuresis, urine alkalization, and fluid/electrolyte balance maintenance.

Implications:

  • This report documents the first known case of quail poisoning in a child, expanding the known demographic affected by this syndrome.
  • The underlying etiology of quail poisoning remains unclear, with toxic effects or genetic sensitivity proposed as potential causes.
