Summary

Neonatal nephrocalcinosis often resolves spontaneously by childhood. This study found no long-term renal dysfunction, suggesting prematurity may be a risk factor for hypercalciuria.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the spontaneous resolution of neonatal nephrocalcinosis.
  • To assess the long-term effects of neonatal nephrocalcinosis on renal function in preterm infants.

  • A follow-up study of 14 preterm infants with neonatal nephrocalcinosis compared to 14 matched controls at 5-7 years of age.
  • Assessment included physical examination, blood pressure, renal ultrasound, and detailed urine and blood biochemistry, including glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and tubular reabsorption of phosphate (TmP/GFR).
