Background:

  • Diverticulitis, particularly sigmoid diverticulitis, is a common condition requiring surgical intervention.
  • Elective sigmoid colectomy is performed for recurrent or complicated diverticulitis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic-assisted sigmoid colectomy for uncomplicated diverticulitis.
  • To assess the postoperative benefits of the laparoscopic approach compared to open surgery.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective comparison of 5 patients undergoing laparoscopic-assisted sigmoid colectomy and 4 patients undergoing open sigmoid colectomy for uncomplicated diverticulitis between 1997 and 2001.

    • The laparoscopic approach leads to reduced analgesic requirements, earlier ambulation, and quicker recovery, resulting in a shorter hospital stay.
