Admissions Practices

Background:

High applicant numbers in radiography programs necessitate effective admissions strategies.
Programs must justify admissions and evaluate attrition to ensure educational accountability.
Identifying optimal candidates is crucial for radiography program success.

Purpose of the Study:

To document the admission requirements of entry-level radiography programs.
Focus on programs accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) in Oklahoma and Texas.

Main Methods:

A survey study was conducted with 45 JRCERT-accredited radiography programs in Oklahoma and Texas.
A 14-question survey collected data on program demographics, admission criteria, and practices.

Main Results:

Commonly used admission criteria include cumulative GPA, interviews, math/science course completion, and standardized test performance.
No single admission criterion was universally applied across all surveyed programs.

Conclusions:

This study represents an initial step in identifying effective radiography program admission criteria.
Future research should correlate specific admission criteria with program retention, completion, and professional certification rates.
