Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Public Health
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Low socioeconomic status is a known risk factor for preterm delivery.
  • Taiwan experienced significant economic growth and improved living standards from 1957 to 1987.
  • These societal changes suggest a potential decline in preterm delivery rates might be expected.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of socioeconomic changes on preterm delivery rates in Taiwan.
  • To determine if national advancements influenced preterm birth trends over a 30-year period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of birth registry data.
  • Analysis of preterm delivery rates from 1957 to 1987 at Tri-Service General Hospital.
  • Correlation analysis between socioeconomic indicators and preterm birth incidence.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The rate of preterm delivery remained consistently stable throughout the 30-year study period.
  • No significant association was found between country-wide social changes and preterm birth rates.
  • Preterm delivery incidence was unaffected by Taiwan's economic and educational advancements.

Conclusions:

  • Socioeconomic development in Taiwan did not lead to a reduction in preterm delivery rates during the studied period.
  • Further research is needed to identify factors influencing preterm birth independent of socioeconomic status.
  • The relationship between socioeconomic factors and preterm birth may be more complex than previously assumed.
