Area of Science:

  • Medical Imaging
  • Nuclear Medicine
  • Instrumentation

Background:

  • The Biograph Sensation 16 (BS16) PET/CT tomographs utilize detector electronics that influence timing coincidence windows and energy thresholds.
  • Previous performance benchmarks of the BS16 system are established.
  • Advancements in detector electronics aim to optimize PET scanner performance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the performance of the BS16 PET scanner before and after the Pico-3D electronics upgrade.
  • To quantify changes in key performance metrics such as scatter fraction, count-rate performance, and image quality.
  • To assess the impact of optimized signal processing on PET imaging protocols.

Main Methods:

  • Four NEMA NU 2-2001 protocols were employed: spatial resolution, scatter fraction, count losses and randoms, sensitivity, and image quality.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Performance evaluations were conducted on the BS16 PET scanner prior to and following the Pico-3D electronics installation.
  • Image reconstruction was performed using the AW-OSEM (4ix8s) algorithm.
  • Main Results:

    • A 14% decrease in scatter fraction was observed post-upgrade, with a value of approximately 0.42 at typical patient background activity.
    • Noise Equivalent Count-Rate (NECR) performance improved, with the peak R(NEC) increasing from 3.7 x 10(4) s(-1) to 6.4 x 10(4) s(-1).
    • Peak true count-rate increased from 1.9 x 10(5) s(-1) to 3.4 x 10(5) s(-1), and contrast improved by 45% for hot spheres and 12% for cold spheres.

    Conclusions:

    • The Pico-3D electronics upgrade significantly enhances BS16 PET scanner performance through optimized signal processing.
    • Narrower energy and timing coincidence windows result in a substantial increase in the signal-to-noise ratio.
    • The upgraded BS16 tomographs support imaging protocols with reduced acquisition times, leading to higher patient throughput.
