Summary

High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) may cause temporary increases in plasma creatinine in patients with kidney diseases, including glomerulonephritis. These renal function changes were transient and reversible, with no associated symptoms observed.

Background:

  • Investigating the safety and efficacy of high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) in patients with kidney diseases.
  • Assessing the impact of IVIG on renal function markers in nephrotic patients with glomerulonephritis.

Observation:

  • Six nephrotic patients with glomerulonephritis receiving high-dose IVIG showed a transient rise in plasma creatinine.
  • Two patients with pre-existing renal impairment (without nephrotic syndrome) also experienced a transient, reversible rise in plasma creatinine post-IVIG.

Findings:

  • High-dose IVIG administration was associated with temporary, asymptomatic elevations in plasma creatinine.
  • The observed renal function disturbances were short-lived and reversible, with no changes in urinary sediment.

Implications:

  • High-dose IVIG may induce transient renal function disturbances in patients with existing kidney conditions.
  • Careful monitoring of renal function is recommended during high-dose IVIG therapy in susceptible patients.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms behind IVIG-induced renal effects.
