Summary

Obese men have lower plasma progesterone levels, which correlate with increased body mass index and waist circumference. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) is the best steroid predictor of progesterone, suggesting altered adrenal steroid production in obesity.

  • Measurement of plasma progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, androstenedione, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S).
