Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Nursing Science

Background:

  • Heart failure (HF) is a widespread condition with significant disabling symptoms.
  • Cognitive impairment (CI) in HF patients may be more prevalent than previously recognized.
  • Multiple factors, including the disease and its treatments, contribute to CI in HF.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore the patient perspective on cognitive impairment in heart failure.
  • To identify the impact of memory deficits on patient education in HF.
  • To describe potential nursing interventions for managing CI in HF patients.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized exemplars from a research study to illustrate patient experiences.
  • Qualitative analysis of patient perspectives on cognitive function.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Literature review on etiologies of CI in HF and nursing interventions.
  • Main Results:

    • Heart failure patients experience a range of cognitive impairments, notably memory deficits.
    • Cognitive impairment significantly hinders effective patient education and self-management.
    • Patient narratives underscore the need for tailored support and interventions.

    Conclusions:

    • Cognitive impairment is a critical, often overlooked, aspect of heart failure care.
    • Nursing interventions are essential to mitigate the effects of CI on patient education and outcomes.
    • Further research is needed to develop and validate targeted interventions for CI in HF.
