Summary

Childhood vaccination with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) is linked to fewer invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) cases in seniors. This study confirms a significant negative association between PCV7 use in children and IPD hospitalizations in the elderly.

Background:

  • Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) poses a significant health burden, particularly in elderly populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between childhood 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) coverage and IPD hospitalization rates in elderly individuals.
  • To examine the relationship between 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) use and IPD hospitalizations in the elderly.

  • State-level analysis correlating pediatric PCV7 vaccination coverage rates (children 19-35 months) with elderly IPD hospitalization rates.
