Summary

Agalactic mares show reduced basal thyroxine (T4) and prolactin (PRL) levels compared to normally lactating mares. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) administration revealed potential insufficient PRL secretion in agalactic mares.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum concentrations of prolactin (PRL) and iodothyronines (thyroxine [T4] and triiodothyronine [T3]) in agalactic versus normally lactating mares.
  • To assess the hormonal response to thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) administration in both groups of mares.

  • Serum samples were collected from agalactic (n=26) and normal (n=8) mares on Days 1 and 5 postpartum.
