    Background:

    • Apolipoproteins are crucial for lipoprotein structure and metabolism.
    • Pregnancy is associated with hyperlipoproteinemia, but apolipoprotein changes are understudied.
    • Understanding gestational apolipoprotein profiles is key to characterizing pregnancy-induced lipemia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To comprehensively characterize apolipoprotein alterations during normal pregnancy.
    • To investigate changes in Apolipoprotein B (ApoB), Apolipoprotein A (ApoA), and Apolipoprotein C (ApoC) during gestation.

    Main Methods:

    • Studied 38 pregnant women (18-39 weeks gestation) and 8 women with serial sampling.
    • Measured plasma and lipoprotein lipids using standard assays.
    • Quantified ApoB via radioimmunoassay and assessed ApoA/ApoC interrelations using disc gel electrophoresis.

    Main Results:

    • Elevated triglycerides (TG) and cholesterol observed in 95% of pregnant women.
    • Progressive increase in TG, especially in very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-TG, during gestation.
    • Increased total and VLDL-ApoB, with unchanged LDL-ApoB, altering ApoB density distribution (VLDL-ApoB increased from 3.6% to 6.7%).
    • Relative amounts of ApoC-II/ApoC-III in VLDL and ApoA-I/ApoA-II ratios in HDL remained unchanged.

    Conclusions:

    • Pregnancy significantly alters apolipoprotein profiles, particularly increasing VLDL-ApoB and TG-rich LDL.
    • These changes may stem from altered VLDL secretion or catabolism rates.
    • Gestational apolipoprotein changes differ from those induced by high-carbohydrate diets.
