Summary

Gnathostomiasis is a parasitic infection now endemic in Myanmar. A patient relapsed after standard ivermectin treatment, leading to a new double-dose recommendation for this zoonotic disease.

Background:

Observation:

  • A case of cutaneous gnathostomiasis was reported in a patient acquired in Myanmar.
  • The patient presented with symptoms consistent with gnathostomiasis.
  • Despite initial treatment with ivermectin, the patient experienced a relapse after apparent clinical cure.

Findings:

  • Myanmar should be recognized as a country where gnathostomiasis can be acquired.
