Summary

Melanoma developing in nevus spilus (NS) is rare. Key risk factors for melanoma in NS patients include congenital presence, size over 4 cm, and giant or zosteriform types. Regular self-examination is recommended.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Context:

  • Nevus spilus (NS) is a pigmented skin lesion characterized by café-au-lait macules with dark speckles.
  • Malignant transformation of NS into melanoma is infrequent but a significant concern.
  • Understanding risk factors for melanoma in NS is crucial for early detection and management.

Purpose:

  • To identify clinical and histological features associated with melanoma development within nevus spilus.
  • To analyze patient demographics, nevus spilus characteristics, and melanoma details in a case series and published literature.

Summary:

  • A study analyzed 25 cases (5 new, 20 published) of melanoma within nevus spilus.
  • Associated risk factors for melanoma in NS included congenital onset, diameter >4 cm, and giant or zosteriform types.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Superficial spreading melanoma (SSM) was the most common histological type, with a median Breslow thickness of 1.25 mm.
  • Impact:

    • Identifies specific nevus spilus subtypes and characteristics that may warrant closer monitoring for melanoma.
    • Highlights the rarity of melanoma in NS, precluding definitive follow-up guidelines but emphasizing the importance of self-examination.
    • Contributes to the understanding of melanoma risk stratification in patients with pigmented lesions.
