Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Facial Aesthetic Surgery
  • Oromaxillofacial Surgery

Background:

  • Prominent zygoma is a common concern in Oriental populations, often associated with negative aesthetic perceptions.
  • Zygoma contouring aims to achieve an ideal oval facial shape and improve profile aesthetics.
  • Achieving optimal results in reduction malarplasty requires careful consideration of facial harmony and potential ancillary procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a specific reduction malarplasty technique for zygoma contouring.
  • To assess patient satisfaction and aesthetic outcomes following the described surgical method.
  • To highlight the benefits of combining reduction malarplasty with ancillary facial procedures.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 30 patients underwent reduction malarplasty using intraoral incisions and L-shaped osteotomies.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The zygomatic body was reduced, and the posterior zygomatic arch was accessed via a preauricular stab incision.
  • Combined procedures included mandibular angle reduction, rhinoplasty, and double-fold operations in select cases.
  • Main Results:

    • All 30 patients reported high satisfaction with the aesthetic outcomes.
    • The surgical technique resulted in decreased facial width and improved midfacial contour.
    • The procedure demonstrated a short operating time (1 hour), minimized postoperative edema, and left no conspicuous scars.

    Conclusions:

    • The described reduction malarplasty technique is simple, safe, and effective for zygoma contouring in Oriental patients.
    • Simultaneous ancillary procedures contribute to optimal patient satisfaction and aesthetic enhancement.
    • The method offers a relatively short recovery period and achieves a more youthful and charming facial appearance.
