Summary

Prolonged sitting combined with whole body vibration and awkward postures significantly increases low back pain risk. Sitting alone does not pose a risk, but these combined factors quadruple the likelihood of developing LBP.

Background:

  • Low back pain (LBP) is a leading cause of disability and economic burden globally.
  • Prolonged sitting is a common occupational exposure linked to LBP risk.
  • Physical co-exposures like whole body vibration (WBV) and awkward postures may modify this risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and synthesize research on the association between prolonged sitting and LBP.
  • To investigate the role of co-exposures such as WBV and awkward postures in LBP development.
  • To identify occupational groups with the highest LBP risk.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic literature review of 25 selected studies.
  • Inclusion criteria: occupations with >50% sitting time and physical co-exposures.

    • Sitting alone was not associated with increased LBP risk.

    Conclusions:

    • Prolonged sitting is not an independent risk factor for LBP.
    • The combination of prolonged sitting with WBV and/or awkward postures significantly elevates LBP and sciatica risk.
    • Occupational interventions should address these combined exposures to mitigate LBP.
