Summary

Viridans streptococci can cause pneumonia in young children. This finding is important for diagnosing pediatric pneumonia, especially when other bacteria are not detected.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology
  • Respiratory Medicine

Background:

  • Pneumonia is a common childhood illness.
  • Bacterial pathogens are a significant cause of pediatric pneumonia.
  • The role of specific bacteria, like viridans streptococci, in pediatric pneumonia requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and significance of viridans streptococci as a causative agent in pediatric pneumonia.
  • To assess the contribution of viridans streptococci to pneumonia in children under five presenting to emergency departments.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of pediatric patients under 5 years old.
  • Inclusion criteria: clinical and radiological evidence of pneumonia.
  • Analysis of positive blood cultures (haemocultures) for isolated microorganisms.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Viridans streptococci were identified as the sole microorganism in 10 out of 33 (30.3%) positive blood cultures.
  • These isolates were found in children presenting with pneumonia to the pediatric emergency room.

Conclusions:

  • Viridans streptococci should be considered a potential cause of pneumonia in young children.
  • The findings suggest that viridans streptococci play a more significant role in pediatric pneumonia than previously recognized.
  • Clinicians should consider viridans streptococci in the differential diagnosis of pediatric pneumonia, particularly in cases with positive blood cultures showing this organism as the sole pathogen.
