Background:

  • Current methods for staging underlying diseases exist, but practical tools for staging pain and disability are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a brief pain assessment and clinical staging method for older adults with joint pain.
  • To base the staging on recognized features of chronic pain and existing measurement tools.

  • 781 adults aged 50+ with recent knee pain participated.
  • Pain and disability were staged using the Chronic Pain Grade (self-reported persistence and severity).
  • Staging was compared with patient perceptions and healthcare utilization.

  • Knee pain severity correlated with dissatisfaction, prioritization, analgesic use, mood, mobility, general health, and consultations.
  • Pain persistence showed fewer independent associations.

  • Further validation in routine settings and for other joint pain sites is warranted.
