Suprapubic aspiration (SPA) using ultrasound is a safe method for obtaining urine samples in adults when other methods fail. This technique, rarely used in the Emergency Department (ED), should be considered more often.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Emergency Medicine
- Diagnostic Procedures
Background:
- Suprapubic aspiration (SPA) is an infrequently utilized method for urine sample collection in adult Emergency Departments (EDs).
- Conventional urine collection can be challenging in patients with limited mobility or positioning constraints.
Observation:
- A case study involving an elderly woman with severe flexion contractures is presented.
- Standard urine collection methods were not feasible due to the patient's positioning limitations.
Findings:
- Bedside ultrasound guidance enabled the safe and successful performance of suprapubic aspiration (SPA).
- This minimally invasive procedure provided a viable alternative for urine sample collection in a complex patient case.
Implications:
- Ultrasound-guided SPA is a safe and effective technique for urine sampling in the adult ED.
- Increased utilization of this method could benefit patients with positioning challenges, improving diagnostic capabilities.
