Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry

Context:

  • Essential tremor (ET) is a common neurological disorder.
  • Social phobia (SP) is a prevalent anxiety disorder.
  • The comorbidity of ET and SP is not well-understood.

Purpose:

  • To determine the frequency of social phobia in essential tremor patients.
  • To compare disability levels between ET patients with and without social phobia.
  • To investigate the impact of social phobia severity on disability in ET.

Summary:

  • Social phobia was diagnosed in 42.2% of 45 essential tremor patients.
  • ET patients with social phobia showed higher functional disability scores (Sheehan Disability Scale) despite similar tremor severity.
  • Social anxiety (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale) and social avoidance significantly correlated with increased disability.

Related Experiment Videos

Impact:

  • Findings highlight the significant impact of social phobia on disability in essential tremor.
  • Suggests that screening for and treating social phobia in ET patients is essential for comprehensive care.
  • Challenges restrictive diagnostic approaches, advocating for integrated treatment strategies.
