[Long-term results of operative treatment of gastric ulcers]
Abstract:
Long-term results of operative treatment of 191 patients with ulcers of gastric localization were studied at terms from 1 year to 10 years. In 40 patients with malignant ulcers the recurrent cancer appeared within 5 years after resection of the stomach, during the first year--in 95%. In a group of 19 patients with malignant ulcers not diagnosed before operation recurrent cancer has also appeared in half of the patients, but during the first year in 1/3 only. After resection of the stomach for benign ulcers (122 patients) cancer was revealed in 5 (3.7%) patients within 3 years. As the preoperative investigation fails to reliably exclude the appearance of early cancer in the gastric ulcer margin the authors speak in favor of wider indications for resection of the stomach and for performing the operations with the observation of all oncological requirements.
