Summary

Supinator syndrome may be a specific form of posterior interosseous nerve syndrome. Electromyography studies showed supinator muscle involvement in most posterior interosseous nerve cases.

Background:

  • The relationship between supinator syndrome and posterior interosseous nerve syndrome is poorly understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between supinator syndrome and posterior interosseous nerve syndrome.
  • To determine if supinator syndrome is a subtype of posterior interosseous nerve syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of electrodiagnostic records.
  • Analysis of 12 patients with deep radial nerve (posterior interosseous nerve) involvement.
  • Electrophysiologic assessment including supinator muscle and superficial radial nerve function.

Main Results:

  • Two-thirds of patients with posterior interosseous nerve involvement showed electrophysiologic abnormalities in the supinator muscle.
  • The remaining patients did not show supinator muscle involvement.
  • Superficial radial nerves exhibited normal evoked action potential amplitudes and latencies in all cases.

Conclusions:

  • Supinator syndrome is proposed to be a specific manifestation of posterior interosseous nerve syndrome.
  • Electrophysiologic findings support a close relationship between these two conditions.
