Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Antibiotic prophylaxis is standard practice in urologic and endourologic procedures to prevent postsurgical infections.
  • Gram-negative bacteria are the most common pathogens, guiding antibiotic selection towards quinolones or beta-lactams.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of different antibiotic prophylaxis regimens in endourologic procedures.
  • To compare the incidence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) following procedures with ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and prulifloxacin.

Main Methods:

  • A study involving 131 patients undergoing various endourologic procedures (cystoscopy, catheterism, lithotripsy, biopsy).
  • Patients received antimicrobial prophylaxis with ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, or prulifloxacin.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Post-surgical UTI incidence was monitored for 15 days.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall incidence of UTIs within 15 days post-surgery was 8.4%.
    • Prulifloxacin showed a lower UTI incidence (5.5%) compared to ciprofloxacin (9.1%) and levofloxacin (11.1%).
    • Patient compliance was high (93.1%), and no major differences in efficacy were detected between the antibiotics in this study.

    Conclusions:

    • Prulifloxacin is a well-tolerated therapeutic option for antibacterial prophylaxis in endourologic procedures.
    • Its broad spectrum, favorable pharmacokinetics, and ease of use support its consideration in both hospital and outpatient settings.
