Area of Science:

  • Cardiovascular Medicine
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Interventional Cardiology

Background:

  • Acute chest pain and dyspnea are common presenting symptoms requiring prompt diagnosis.
  • Pulmonary embolism is a frequent initial consideration for these symptoms.

Observation:

  • A 75-year-old woman presented with acute chest pain and dyspnea.
  • Initial investigations suggested pulmonary embolism, but imaging revealed aortic ulceration with intramural hematoma and impending rupture.

Findings:

  • Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were crucial in diagnosing the aortic pathology.
  • Immediate stent-graft placement effectively controlled aortic leakage and stabilized the patient.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • CT imaging is vital for undiagnosed acute chest pain, especially after excluding acute coronary syndrome.
  • Endovascular stent-graft repair offers a viable emergency treatment for descending aortic rupture.
