Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Oncology
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells.
  • While typically affecting older adults, rare cases occur in younger individuals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency and clinical characteristics of multiple myeloma in young adults in India.
  • To compare young adult myeloma cases with adult myeloma presentations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 14 myeloma cases in individuals under 40 years old.
  • Review of clinical presentations, radiological findings, and myeloma typing (IgG, IgA, light chain).

Main Results:

  • Young adult myeloma occurred in 14 out of 178 cases (1993-1999).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinical symptoms (backache, bone pain, weakness) and radiological findings (lytic lesions, fractures) mirrored adult myeloma.
  • Predominantly IgG myeloma (10/14 cases) and increased solitary plasmacytoma frequency were observed.
  • Conclusions:

    • Multiple myeloma in young Indian adults occurs with notable frequency.
    • Clinical and serological profiles are similar to adult myeloma, with a predominance of IgG type.
    • A higher incidence of solitary plasmacytoma is noted in this age group.
