Summary

Nitric oxide (NO) levels were lower in children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to controls. This suggests nitric oxide may play a role in disruptive behavioral disorders like ADHD.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) is implicated in various neuropsychiatric disorders.
  • Clinical investigations into NO's role in disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD) are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between serum nitric oxide (NO) levels and disruptive behavioral disorders (DBD).
  • To compare NO levels in patients with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and ADHD with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) against healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Serum NO levels were measured in 45 patients diagnosed with DBD (30 ADHD, 15 ADHD + ODD).
  • Serum NO levels were also measured in 51 healthy control subjects.
  • Statistical analysis was performed to compare NO levels between groups.

  • Patients with ADHD alone exhibited significantly lower blood NO levels compared to both the ADHD + ODD group and healthy controls.

  • Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific mechanisms by which NO influences DBD development and presentation.
