Abstract:
(1) A prospective study in Germany showed that 12% of hospitalised children experienced adverse drug reactions. These reactions were the reason for hospitalisation in 1.8% of cases. (2) A meta-analysis of 17 prospective studies of adverse drug reactions in children, published in 2001, and two French prospective studies published in 1998 and 2005, showed that the incidence of hospital admissions for adverse effects was about 2%. This is similar to the frequency observed in adults. (3) In the German study, conclusive information leading to the identification of adverse effects was provided by a nurse in 31% of cases, a doctor in 21% of cases, medical record review in 30% of cases, the children themselves in 6% of cases, and the family in 12% of cases.
