Background:

Inwardly rectifying currents play a crucial role in regulating neuronal excitability.
Understanding these currents in olfactory receptor neurons is key to deciphering olfactory signal processing.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the characteristics of inwardly rectifying currents in rat olfactory receptor neurons.
To determine the ionic basis and functional implications of these currents.

Main Methods:

Patch-clamp electrophysiology was employed on enzymatically dissociated rat olfactory receptor neurons.
Voltage-clamp protocols were used to elicit and analyze inward currents.

Main Results:

Hyperpolarization below -100 mV revealed small inward-current relaxations.
The current was insensitive to Ba2+ but abolished by Cs+.
Increased external K+ enhanced the current, with tail currents reversing at -26 mV in 25 mM [K+]o.

Conclusions:

The observed current exhibits properties consistent with mixed Na+/K+ inward rectification.
This current may contribute to modulating olfactory receptor neuron excitability in response to odorants.
