Background:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition with unclear causes.
Oxidative stress, an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants, is implicated in ASD pathogenesis.
Previous research indicates altered levels of lipid peroxidation products and antioxidant defenses in individuals with autism.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the role of oxidative stress in autism.
To examine markers of oxidative stress, including lipid peroxidation products and antioxidant proteins, in children with autism.
To explore the relationship between oxidative stress markers and clinical symptoms in autism.

Main Methods:

Measurement of lipid peroxidation products in biological samples.
Quantification of serum levels of antioxidant proteins such as transferrin and ceruloplasmin.
Analysis of erythrocyte membrane phospholipid alterations (phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine).
Assessment of antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase).

Main Results:

Elevated markers of lipid peroxidation indicate increased oxidative stress in autism.
Reduced levels of serum transferrin and ceruloplasmin were observed in children with autism.
Decreased phosphatidylethanolamine and increased phosphatidylserine levels were found in erythrocyte membranes.
Alterations in antioxidant enzyme activities and glutathione metabolism were suggested.

Conclusions:

Increased oxidative stress is a significant factor in autism.
Abnormalities in antioxidant defense systems and membrane lipids may contribute to autism pathogenesis.
Oxidative stress links to inflammation, immune dysfunction, and excitotoxicity in autism, potentially driving clinical symptoms.
