Summary

A novel stapes prosthesis (SMart-Piston) simplifies prosthesis fixation during stapes surgery. Postoperative audiological testing showed excellent air-bone gap closure, indicating successful outcomes for this innovative hearing restoration technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and describe the SMart-Piston, a novel stapes prosthesis with memory characteristics for wire crimping.
  • To evaluate the feasibility and initial outcomes of using the SMart-Piston in routine stapes surgery.

Main Methods:

  • The SMart-Piston prosthesis (0.5 mm shaft diameter, 4.25-4.5 mm length) was used in 15 patients undergoing stapes surgery.
  • Heat-induced wire crimping for prosthesis fixation was performed using CO2 laser (5 patients) or bipolar diathermy forceps (10 patients).

    • Long-term outcomes in a larger patient cohort are anticipated to further validate this innovative approach.
